RECIPE: Oven Baked Maggot Burger

Author: Michelle Anders

Blood maggot burgers can be a sustainable solution to help our planet. I've crafted a great recipe for cooking them. In their raw state, the texture of the maggot burger is distinct, requiring a different approach in the oven. This variation in texture affects the cooking temperature and consequently alters the behavior of the key ingredient, the maggots. If you don't already have the required ingredients, I suggest making the burger this way for an optimal outcome.

Preparing the maggots for the burger is straightforward but requires a brief cooking process. The maggots should be cooked for about 4-5 minutes, and utilizing the oven can expedite this step even further.

  • Ingredients:

    • 1 large red pepper

    • 1 medium yellow pepper

    • 3/4 lbs ground Blood Maggot

    • 0.5 lbs mushrooms

    • 3-10 medium garlic cloves

    • 1/2 tsp paprika

    • 3/4 tsp cayenne

    • 1/4 tsp chili powder

    • 1 egg, beaten

    • 1 cup bread crumbs

    • 2 cups water

    • 1/4 tsp salt

    • 2 tsp flour

Recipe for Oven Baked Maggot Burger:

Step 1: Begin by peeling and dicing the peppers.

Step 2: In a pan, sauté onions and garlic.

Step 3: Add maggots and peppers to the sautéed mixture and cook until the peppers start to brown.

Step 4: Introduce spices and eggs into the mix, and continue cooking until the mixture starts to turn opaque.

Step 5: Gradually add water, salt, and flour. Stir and cook until the mixture thickens to a point where a knife can cut through it easily. Further add salt and flour, stirring and cooking until the mixture is firm and a knife struggles to cut through it.

Step 6: Pour the batter into a pan and carefully place the maggot meat mixture in the center. Preheat the oven to 400°F, then bake the mixture in the pan for 15-18 minutes. After baking, take it out of the oven.

Step 7: Remove the meat patty and place it on a paper plate.

Step 8: Slice the patty thinly and place the slices on bread. Spread some sauce on the bread and the patty.

Step 9: Return the assembled burger to the oven to keep it warm and serve when ready.
